The sheriff of Gibson County in Tennessee, Paul Thomas, was indicted on 22 charges including official misconduct, theft, and forgery for illegally profiting from jail inmates' work under his supervision. He was also accused of housing inmates in a home outside of the prison without permission. Thomas is alleged to have directed over $1.4 million in inmate wage fees to a company he had an ownership interest in, concealed his involvement with the company from annual filings, and received illegal compensation from the company through inmate labor. Investigations revealed the misuse of public funds and deception of the Tennessee Department of Correction, resulting in over $500,000 in unapproved reimbursements. Thomas denies the charges and awaits trial.
