A digital civil rights group found that publicly available artificial intelligence tools can manipulate the voices of prominent political figures to create convincing election lies. Testing six AI voice-cloning tools, the group discovered that these tools generated believable fake audio in 80% of cases, including statements like U.S. President Joe Biden claiming votes are counted twice and French President Emmanuel Macron warning against voting due to bomb threats. The lack of regulations and self-regulation among companies leaves voters susceptible to AI-generated deception during significant democratic elections worldwide.
