Thai Minister of Social Development and Human Security Varawut Silpa-archa urged the public to stop giving alms to beggars, citing an increase in their numbers and some earning up to 100,000 Baht per month. The department collaborates with various organizations to conduct monthly operations to apprehend and place beggars, with penalties including up to one month in prison and fines up to 10,000 Baht, aiming to curb begging. Around 7,000 beggars have been caught in the past decade, with 30% being foreigners, prompting the call to halt giving alms to them as their numbers continue to rise, despite earnings not being officially confirmed but possibly reaching 100,000 Baht during peak tourism seasons.
