On June 18, 2024, the Thai Parliament overwhelmingly passed the marriage equality law, legalizing same-sex marriage in the country, making Thailand the third Asian country and the first in Southeast Asia to recognize same-sex marriage. The bill received 130 votes in favor and 4 against in the Senate before being sent to the palace for royal assent. Despite cultural acceptance, legal recognition has been delayed due to conservative opposition, but the current elected government has prioritized LGBTQ rights, with the Prime Minister even participating in support events. Thailand's move comes after Taiwan and Nepal in recognizing same-sex marriage.
