On June 18, 2024, Thailand's parliament overwhelmingly passed the marriage equality bill, making it the third country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage after Taiwan and Nepal. The law will come into effect 120 days after being published in the Royal Gazette. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed his support for the law, and with 130 senators voting in favor and only 4 against, the bill is expected to be approved by the king and enacted soon. Taiwan was the first country in Asia to pass marriage equality legislation, followed by Nepal in 2023, and now Thailand has joined them, becoming the first Southeast Asian country to do so.
