Farmers recommend storing whole watermelons at room temperature in a cool spot out of the sun to maintain flavor, texture, and nutritive value. Watermelons should not be refrigerated for extended periods as it can affect the levels of lycopene, which helps fight cell damage. A whole watermelon can keep for one week in a cool, dry spot, or two to three weeks if refrigerated briefly. When cut, store slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for three to four days, or utilize the rind to maintain natural moisture barrier and freshness.
