The Commercial Times: Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine Seem Near yet Far

Reported 8 months ago

On June 18, 2024, after over two years of war, Russia and Ukraine find themselves in a difficult situation on the battlefield. Both sides are starting to lay the groundwork to step onto the negotiation table. Despite the challenges, there are signs that both countries are willing to negotiate. Russian President Putin has expressed clear readiness to negotiate and proposed specific terms. President Zelensky of Ukraine has focused on the Switzerland Peace Summit, but the meeting did not lead to significant progress. The pressure from various countries, including China, Europe, and the United States, is escalating, pushing for negotiations but also increasing the risk of renewed conflict. The world hopes for a peace agreement, although it might come as late as 2025. Nevertheless, the mere act of initiating negotiations is a significant achievement toward reducing risks and promoting global peace.
