The Importance of the Chinese Market for German Car Manufacturers

Reported 9 months ago

In the EU-China tariff dispute, German car manufacturers, including Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, have a significant interest in the Chinese market, with potential impacts on their profits if China retaliates with tariffs. Despite limited exports to China in terms of quantity, German manufacturers mainly sell high-end models there. For instance, Volkswagen is the market leader in China, with 35% of its total sales coming from there in 2023. Porsche, not locally produced in China, could be most affected by retaliatory tariffs, while Mercedes-Benz has about 36% of its total sales in the Chinese market. BMW, on the other hand, sold over 825,000 cars in China in 2023, with potential losses if EU tariffs affect their exported models.
