Yude Ling, also known as the 'Princess Ling,' was a highly favored translator by Empress Dowager Cixi. Yude Ling, along with her sister Yurong Ling, brought a new atmosphere to Cixi's repressed court life by introducing Western fashion, makeup, soaps, and even coffee. Cixi attempted to arrange a marriage for Yude Ling, but the Emperor Guangxu intervened, leading to her departure from the palace and eventual marriage to Thaddeus C. White, a vice consul in Shanghai. Yude Ling left a written record in 'Memoirs of the Chinese Court' reflecting on her time in the palace, depicting a different side of Cixi not portrayed as a tyrant. Yude Ling was active in supporting China during the war and later faced personal challenges including divorce and a tragic death in a car accident in Canada in 1944.
