Known for the Moai statues, Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, was inhabited by Polynesian seafarers at least 900 years ago, with a significant population decline starting in the early 18th century. Previous studies suggested that the island's collapse was due to exceeding its natural resource capacity, but new research challenges this. A recent study published in Science Advances used satellite technology to analyze the island's rock mulching fields and estimated a population capacity much lower than previously believed, indicating that the collapse may have occurred after European contact due to introduced diseases.
