Becoming a NEET—‘not in employment, education, or training’—is increasingly popular among Gen Z, with around a fifth of individuals between 15 to 24 worldwide categorized as NEETs. Many young NEETS are well-qualified and eager to work but are unable to secure jobs due to a ‘perfect storm’ of AI advancements and recession-proofing, leading to a pool of ‘new unemployables.’ Employers are hesitant to hire due to AI impact uncertainty, causing a stagnation in job creation and forcing Gen Z job seekers to employ creative measures like personal branding, pitching, and unconventional job-seeking methods to land opportunities.
