Ancient emperors often had numerous concubines for the purpose of bearing heirs, and a system known as 'flipping a card' was invented where a eunuch would reveal the chosen concubine for the night. The Department of Ceremony Services, responsible for arranging the concubines for the emperor, was a coveted position due to the power and benefits it provided. Concubines would compete to receive the eunuch's favor to increase their chance of being selected. However, for the concubines, being sent to the Department of Ceremony Services meant potentially being excluded from the emperor's presence forever, facing harsh punishments, and being at the mercy of the eunuchs, making it a nightmare rather than a desirable place.
