Three Judges of Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal Resign Within a Week; Jonathan Sumption: Hong Kong Gradually Becoming Authoritarian Region

Reported 10 months ago

Beverley McLachlin, a non-permanent judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal from Canada, announced her retirement with the reason of wanting to spend more time with family after the end of her term in late July, becoming the third judge to resign within a week. Events last week saw British judges Jonathan Sumption and Lawrence Collins resigning as well. Sumption warned of the severe dangers to the rule of law in Hong Kong due to the political environment created by China, stating that Hong Kong is gradually becoming an authoritarian region under unacceptable political environment created by China, which has led many judges to forget their traditional role of defending freedom in the face of increasing political intimidation or persuasion.
