Three Judges Resign in a Week at Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal; Justice McLachlin not to Renew Term

Reported 10 months ago

Beverley McLachlin, a non-permanent judge from Canada at the Court of Final Appeal in Hong Kong, announced her retirement and decision not to renew her term after the end of July to spend more time with family, marking the third resignation of judges within a week. This comes after British judge Jonathan Sumption warned of a 'serious risk' to the rule of law in Hong Kong due to the political environment created by China. With McLachlin, John Sumption, and Lawrence Collins leaving, seven foreign non-permanent judges will remain in the Court of Final Appeal, including three from the UK and four from Australia, following the first resignations since the enactment of the Basic Law Article 23 in March.
