On June 28, 2024, at 4:10 PM, EU leaders reached an agreement at a summit to nominate Ursula von der Leyen for another term as EU Commission President. Additionally, they nominated former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa as the next President of the European Council, and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as the EU's Foreign and Security Policy Chief. While most EU leaders supported these nominations, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni abstained from voting on von der Leyen and opposed Costa and Kallas. The nominations still require approval from the European Parliament, with von der Leyen needing support from allies within the center-right European People's Party. Concerns over ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and implementation of the EU's Green Deal are key issues facing von der Leyen's potential re-election.
