As Taiwan enters into a super-aged society next year with over 65-year-olds accounting for 20%, NHI Director-General Shi Chongliang stated that the healthcare system is facing financial challenges due to aging population. He mentioned the necessity to adjust the financial structure in three stages, with the current NHI general premium statutory upper limit at 6%. Shi emphasized the need to open up the upper limit eventually for sustainability, along with adjusting premium rates through legislation. The Ministry of Health and Welfare recently submitted financial consultation materials to the NHI Administrative Committee, projecting a total NHI expenditure exceeding NT$900 billion next year, paving the way for potential premium rate adjustments in the future.
