President Biden signed a new law requiring Beijing ByteDance to sell its TikTok assets in the US by January 19 next year or face a ban. The US appellate court announced that oral arguments on the legal challenge will be held on September 16. This hearing at the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals will take place in the final weeks of this year's US presidential election, ultimately determining TikTok's fate. Creators, TikTok, and ByteDance have deadlines to submit legal documents by August 20, July 26, and August 15 respectively, aiming for a decision by December 6 to potentially seek Supreme Court review if necessary. The White House seeks to terminate China's ownership of TikTok for national security reasons but does not aim to ban the app outright. Failure to sell TikTok by January 19 will result in a complete ban by the US.
