Japanese media reports that 71-year-old Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike will officially announce her bid for a second term today, with her opponents including Taiwanese-Japanese Senator Renho. The Tokyo Governor Election is scheduled for July 7, and as of yesterday, Koike had been hesitant about her decision, claiming to still be contemplating. However, media sources revealed that she will officially announce her candidacy today, the final day of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly. Other contenders who have announced their participation in the gubernatorial race include the Constitutional Democratic Party senator Renho, former Mayor of Hiroshima Shunji Ishimaru, and former Air Self-Defense Force Chief of Staff Shunji Tamogami. With over 40 candidates having declared their intent to run, this election marks the highest number of gubernatorial contenders in the history of Tokyo Governor elections, surpassing the 22 candidates in the previous election in 2020.
