Tokyo Governor Election Sees Record 56 Candidates Registering, Surpassing Previous High

Reported 10 months ago

The deadline for candidate registration in the Tokyo governor election today resulted in 56 candidates registering, setting a new record high and significantly surpassing the 22 candidates in 2020. However, the election bulletin board initially allowed only 48 slots for candidate posters, leading to discontent when the number exceeded 48. The surge in candidates is attributed to a political group nominating 24 candidates to occupy the bulletin board. The current Tokyo governor, Yuriko Koike, is expected to face stiff competition from 56-year-old Senator Renho, creating a 'battle of the female heroes.' The campaign, termed the 'Tanabata Battle,' will last 17 days and culminate in voting on July 7th, with a focus on their governance records and policies for Tokyo's future.
