The Tokyo governor election has attracted a record 56 candidates, double the number from the previous election, including individuals with extensive leadership experience and well-known figures like former Hiroshima mayor Shinnji Ishimaru, former Air Self-Defense Force chief of staff Shunji Tahegami, and former senator Renho, running as non-partisan newcomers. The increase in candidates is partly attributed to the NHK Party nominating 24 individuals, criticized for profiting from political donations. The election has also seen chaos in campaign poster spaces and issues such as declining birth rates, childcare support, and the controversial Meiji Jingu Gaien redevelopment project being key topics. Incumbent Governor Yuriko Koike and former MP Renho are among the frontrunners, with the election scheduled for July 7th.
