A news report from PTS on June 13, 2024, at 7:44 a.m. highlighted incidents where visitors suffered from swelling and darkened fingers due to being stung by sea urchins while snorkeling in Xiao Liuqiu, Pingtung in early May, leading to cellulitis. However, locals in the area are accustomed to these incidents. The county plans to delist the non-mainly edible Meissner's long-spined sea urchin and the flower urchin due to excessive breeding, which not only harms people but also affects vegetation and wildlife habitats. The county government aims to regulate the total number of visitors to the intertidal zones and collect conservation fees starting in July to address resource depletion, although tourists' opinions vary on this matter.
