Reported 7 months ago

On June 13, 2024, in Pingtung, tourists snorkeling in Xiao Liuqiu experienced a swollen and painful finger a week after being stung by a sea urchin while picking up dropped goggles in the sea. The sting led to cellulitis, a type of skin infection. Although most cases naturally resolve, visitors during peak travel season are advised to seek medical attention if inflammation occurs. Health officials recommend soaking the affected area in warm water and prescribe antibiotics if necessary. The excessive presence of sea urchins in the area is highlighted as a risk, with the county planning their removal to protect coral reefs. Tourists are urged not to touch sea urchins to avoid injury while enjoying the crystal-clear waters of Xiao Liuqiu.
