Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda apologized for extensive cheating on certification tests for seven vehicle models, leading to the suspension of production of three of them. The fraudulent testing at the top Japanese automaker involved inadequate or outdated data in collision tests, incorrect airbag inflation and rear-seat damage testing, and falsified engine power tests. Toyota reassured that the safety of vehicles already on roads was not compromised, and the issue does not affect overseas production. Mazda also reported irregular certification testing and halted production of two models, while Honda apologized for improper tests on various models. The incidents point to a systemic issue in certification processes within the Japanese automotive industry.
