FTNN News, June 27, 2024 - In the past year and a half, 8 firefighters have tragically passed away, prompting Huang Shanshan, a legislator from the People's Party, to question the ongoing issue of insufficient manpower within the firefighting force. She criticizes the constant shortage of personnel at local fire bureaus and the severe overwork conditions. Despite previous government reviews and adjustments in manpower ratios, the current firefighter-to-citizen service ratio in Taiwan remains high at 1:1300, compared to 1:760 in Japan and 1:774 in Korea. Huang suggests introducing more flexibility in recruitment and additional training methods to address the shortage of firefighters.
