Train Derails after Colliding with Falling Rocks in Tunnel 'Puyuma Express', Train Driver Injured and 6 Passengers Hurt

On June 21, 2024, at 5:23 am (updated at 17:50), Taiwan Railways' 229th northbound train, while passing through the Qingshui Tunnel, collided with falling rocks causing the front of the train to derail. Approximately 500 passengers were on board, and it is reported that the train driver suffered a fracture, while 6 passengers were injured. The train got stuck inside the tunnel, and the first three carriages lost power. Taiwan Railways promptly formed a level one emergency response team and dispatched a shuttle train to assist. The incident involved the Puyuma Express train, with the train stopping at the scene and passengers being transferred back to Chongde and Xincheng stations. The Hualien Railway Department director rushed to the site. The locomotive of the 229th train derailed due to the collision. Images provided by the public show the train stopped after hitting the rocks, and passengers awaiting assistance inside the carriages.
