On June 21, 2024, at 11:40 PM, a Taiwan Railways Administration train, the No. 229 Taroko Express, while heading northbound through the Qingshui Tunnel, derailed due to a landslide, causing the driver's hand to fracture and six passengers to sustain minor injuries. In an act of emergency response, volunteer firefighter Chen Jing-wei from Taoyuan, who was in the fourth carriage, rushed to the first carriage to assist the train driver and injured passengers. Amid heavy rainfall warnings in 10 counties, unfortunate events led to the derailment after the train hit falling rocks inside the tunnel, prompting the evacuation of over 500 passengers. Witnesses described hearing several loud bangs at the time of the incident. The immediate and courageous actions of the volunteer firefighter in aiding the injured train driver were particularly touching as he expressed that helping others was more important than fear.
