In order to prevent incidents like the Fanggu Island abandonment case by Meiya Travel Agency earlier this year, which led to revocation of its license by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau, the Ministry of Transportation is proposing to increase the maximum penalty for major violations by travel agencies to one million NT dollars under the Development of Tourism Act, with the aim of protecting the rights of travelers. The amendment is intended to enhance the deterrent effect and avoid situations that could severely impact national interests or the rights of travelers from occurring again.
