On June 27, 2024, at 4:16 am, an apartment building called 'Cheng-Kong-Hui' in the Eastern District of Hsinchu City experienced a massive fire last month, resulting in the deaths of two firefighters. A city councilor from the New Power Party held a press conference today, revealing a handwritten letter from the wife of one of the deceased firefighters. The letter accuses the Hsinchu City Government of shifting blame onto frontline firefighters. In response, Mayor Kao Hong-an stated that the cause of the fire and its location were clear based on on-site investigations, and internal disciplinary actions have been taken by the Fire Department and the Urban Development Bureau. The wife of one of the deceased firefighters expressed deep sorrow and questioned whether the authorities had sincerely reviewed the mistakes and incompetence within the fire department during the incident. The Mayor denied allegations of evasion of responsibility and assured that the investigation results will be handed over to the judicial authorities within a month.
