Tzu Chi Promotes Tea Over Alcohol in Bodh Gaya to Safeguard Health of Local Residents

Reported 11 months ago

On June 8, 2024, in the impoverished villages of Bodh Gaya, India, where villagers commonly brew and sell alcohol to earn a modest income, leading to health risks especially for the youth, Tzu Chi volunteers have spent a year entering villages to promote abstinence from alcohol. By using a model from Taiwan's indigenous communities, they introduced tea as a substitute for alcohol. With efforts focused on educating villagers on the dangers of alcohol through pictures and personal stories, Tzu Chi aims to help residents live healthier lives and extend longevity by encouraging them to quit drinking. Despite facing challenges in convincing individuals to quit alcohol, the volunteers' unwavering dedication and compassion have successfully touched the lives of some villagers, who have agreed to quit drinking and embrace drinking masala tea instead.
