U.S. Department of Education to Resume Collections on Defaulted Student Loans

Reported 1 day ago

Beginning May 5, the U.S. Department of Education will restart collections for defaulted student loans for the first time since March 2020. Over 5 million borrowers are currently in default, and the department plans to notify them about options like loan rehabilitation and income-based repayment plans. Failure to act within 30 days could lead to involuntary collections, such as wage garnishment. Despite criticism from advocates describing the move as harsh, the department promises support resources for borrowers.
