U.S. food companies, including major grocers like Walmart and suppliers such as Smithfield Foods, are preparing for a sales downturn if federal food aid from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is interrupted due to a government shutdown. Nearly 42 million individuals rely on SNAP, and a lapse in benefits could lead to an $8 billion revenue drop for retailers, negatively impacting supply chains and workforce hours. Experts warn that both lower-income consumers and grocery outlets will face serious financial challenges if Congress does not act to maintain funding.
