Uber wins lawsuit over race bias in driver ratings

Reported 8 months ago

A U.S. appeals court dismissed a class action lawsuit alleging Uber Technologies' policy of deactivating drivers with low passenger ratings is racially discriminatory. The court ruled that the plaintiff, Thomas Liu, did not provide evidence to support his claim that non-white drivers were disproportionately affected by Uber's system. The court also criticized the flawed survey presented by Liu's lawyers as insufficient to prove racial bias in the driver rating system. Uber, which deactivates drivers with low scores, was granted a motion to dismiss the case in 2022, and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission supported Liu's claim citing potential bias in customer ratings.
