UK University Suspends Cooperation with Chinese State-Owned Enterprises for AI Technology Theft

Reported 8 months ago

The UK's Imperial College London announced the suspension of cooperation with Chinese state-owned enterprises in 2021 after discovering plans to use academic partnerships to steal AI technology for military purposes. The report, disclosed by The Guardian on June 16, also highlighted warnings from UK intelligence agencies about national security risks caused by reliance on foreign funds within academia. The investigation revealed that a £3 million agreement with the Jiangsu Automation Research Institute, a front for military drone development, was intended for commercial use but integrated into military applications, leading to the termination of the collaboration citing export control regulations and national security concerns.
