On June 25, in a ministerial-level government inter-session meeting in Luxembourg, Ukraine and Moldova formally initiated negotiations on their path towards EU membership. Despite the symbolic nature of starting the accession negotiation process, the EU requires an assessment to confirm eligibility before actual negotiation proceedings begin. Both countries emphasized their commitment to meeting EU standards, including anti-corruption efforts, political transparency, agricultural policies, and customs regulations. These entry requirements pose a challenge for Ukraine, which is currently engaged in conflict with Russia, raising concerns about territorial integrity and complex geopolitical dynamics. Former US President Trump's team has proposed a plan to end the conflict by using US military aid as leverage to bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table. The international community supports ending the war based on international law, and recent actions by the International Criminal Court, issuing arrest warrants for former Russian defense and military officials for war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Ukraine, have been welcomed by Ukraine but dismissed by Russia.
