On June 21, 2024, EU countries officially approved the start of accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova on June 25. The EU rotating presidency, Belgium, stated that EU ministers will negotiate with Ukraine and Moldova in Luxembourg on the said date. Ukrainian President Zelensky described the start of accession talks as a 'historic step,' emphasizing Ukraine's return to Europe and aspirations toward becoming a full-fledged EU member. The initiation of talks will kickstart a potentially lengthy reform process for both countries before EU membership can be achieved, following their applications in 2022 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
