Ukraine Peace Summit Sees New Appeals, Key Countries Absent from Joint Statement

Reported 8 months ago

On June 16, 2024, Ukrainian President Zelensky spoke at the closing press conference of the peace summit in Switzerland. While around 80 out of 100 attending countries signed the joint statement, key nations like India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Brazil, which have significant influence over Russia, did not sign, highlighting the summit's symbolic rather than substantive impact. The joint statement focused on upholding Ukraine's territorial integrity and political independence as a basis for comprehensive and lasting peace, with some constructive requests like allowing Ukraine to operate its own nuclear power plants. The summit, aiming to condemn Russia's actions and stress Ukraine's stance, lacked discussions on post-war arrangements or Ukraine's NATO aspirations.
