On June 24, 2024, Ukraine launched the American-supplied Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) at the Crimea Peninsula amidst tensions with Russia. Russia claimed to have intercepted four missiles, but the fifth one exploded in the air, scattering fragments on the beach, causing at least 5 deaths and 151 injuries. Both sides continued attacks, with Russia also employing aerial-guided bombs, targeting Kharkiv in Ukraine. The use of ATACMS, attributed to the US, sparked accusations and led to Crimea declaring a day of mourning.
