UN Security Council Adopts US-Israeli Ceasefire Draft for Israel-Hamas Conflict

Reported 11 months ago

On June 10, 2024, the United Nations Security Council President Huang Junguo announced the passage of Resolution 2735 with 14 votes in favor, 0 against and 1 abstention, endorsing the US-backed ceasefire plan for Israel and Hamas. While the US hailed the decision as a message to Hamas to accept the ceasefire proposal, Hamas welcomed the vote but insisted on a permanent end to the conflict, a demand Israel is not willing to meet. The US initiative, announced by President Biden on May 31, emphasizes the immediate and unconditional implementation of relevant terms. Israel stressed the need to neutralize Hamas militarily before considering a lasting ceasefire, as Hamas continues rocket attacks despite the vote. This draft proposal was subjected to criticism from previous UN initiatives, as the US and Israel attempt to bring an end to the conflict in the region.
