UN Warns Against Lebanon Becoming Second Gaza

Reported 8 months ago

Youth Daily, June 22, 2024, 12:00 PM Reporter Shi Xinyinyu/The United Nations Secretary-General Guterres expressed concern on June 21 over the escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, warning against Lebanon turning into a second Gaza. With the recent clashes between the Israeli Defense Forces and Hezbollah militants, as well as Israel's approval of a military operation in southern Lebanon, fears of a regional war in the Middle East have risen. Guterres urged all parties to exercise restraint and reduce the risk of miscalculation, emphasizing the role of UNIFIL and UNTSO peacekeeping personnel in stabilizing the situation on the ground. In efforts to ease tensions, both the Lebanese and French governments are considering deploying troops to the south for security missions. However, concerns remain about potential security risks that could arise if Lebanese troops are stationed in the area. The ICRC reported that at least 22 people were killed when an office in the Gaza Strip was hit by Israeli artillery on the same day. With ongoing rocket attacks by Hezbollah militants in southern Lebanon and Israeli ground offensives in Rafah, more civilians are fleeing the area, raising fears of a new humanitarian crisis and escalating cross-border conflicts.
