Ming dynasty literatus Tang Bohu created the upper couplet 'Painting with a Monk Painting a Lotus'. It's a clever wordplay signifying a monk painting lotuses, which were beloved by the monk, ultimately leading to a perfect antithetical couplet by Hanlin Scholar Li Diao Yuan, 'Calligraphy across Han's ink, Hanlin's calligraphy', read the same forwards and backwards. The upper couplet puzzled scholars for over 200 years until Li effortlessly crafted the perfect complement, showcasing the difficulty and brilliance in the art of matching couplets.
