According to Taiwan's Council of Agriculture, the term 'Little Jade Watermelon' does not refer to a specific watermelon variety, but rather to small yellow-flesh watermelons, a popular choice for cooling off during the hot summer months. The Council explains that the name stems from the Japanese term 'gyoku' for round shape, with vendors commonly referring to small yellow-flesh watermelons as 'Little Jade' due to their size. They also provide tips for selecting ripe and sweet watermelons, such as looking for full fruit shape, clear patterns, slightly sunken stem ends, and tapping the surface to hear a deep, hollow sound indicating ripeness and juiciness.
