United Nations Security Council Passes Gaza Ceasefire Resolution with U.S. Ambassador's Support, China in Favor, Russia Abstains

Reported 11 months ago

On June 10, 2024, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield voted in favor of a Gaza ceasefire resolution at the UN Security Council. Following over 7 months of deadly clashes between Israel and the Hamas radical group in Gaza, a glimmer of peace emerged. The Security Council approved the ceasefire agreement proposed by the U.S. with 14 votes in favor and 1 abstention, with China and other 13 nations voting affirmatively. Hamas welcomed the resolution stating willingness to cooperate and implement the three-stage ceasefire plan proposed by President Biden, including relocating Israeli troops and releasing Palestinian prisoners, among others. Russia abstained, claiming the plan was too vague, while the U.S. Secretary of State Blinken engaged in his 8th mediation trip in the Middle East urging Israel to abide by the ceasefire and reaffirming Washington's support.
