A 74-year-old unlicensed driver surnamed Xiao violently collided with sisters surnamed Chen in Changhua, leaving the two sisters still in the hospital relying on life support. In the past five years, there have been over 40,000 unlicensed driving accidents annually in Taiwan, leading to around 70,000 deaths and injuries, surpassing the harm caused by drunk driving and exceeding a societal cost of over tens of billions of NTD. Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker Lin Yueqin stressed the need to impose criminal penalties on unlicensed drivers similar to Japan and the US, with a maximum prison sentence of up to 3 years, vehicle confiscation, license suspension, and penalties for passengers. Despite an increase in fines last year, Lin believes that there are still shortcomings in deterring unlicensed driving, allowing them to remain a potential hazard on the roads.
