As the COVID-19 situation intensifies, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control has raised the projected number of possible infections in mid-July, with an estimated 60,000 weekly infections and over 120,000 medical visits. A new variant strain, LB.1, with increased transmissibility and vaccine escape abilities, is rapidly rising to 14% prevalence in the country. The variant has a stronger immune evasion capability compared to the KP.2 strain and other common variants, but current antiviral drugs and rapid tests remain effective according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO). Additionally, there has been a rare summer flu outbreak in Taiwan, with a notable increase in severe cases and deaths reported.
