The co-chair of the U.S. Congressional artificial intelligence task force, Congressman Jay Obernolte, has urged the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to support the establishment of data centers connected directly to power plants. In a letter dated December 5, he emphasized the importance of these co-located centers for national security and maintaining the U.S.'s competitive edge in global AI development. Obernolte highlighted that such centers could alleviate grid stress, enhance resilience, and lower carbon emissions amid increasing energy demands from AI technologies.
