As of July 1, 2024, in Central and South America, many people are fleeing violence, economic hardship, and the negative impacts of climate change by migrating through Mexico to the United States. To control the influx of immigrants crossing the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia, which reached 500,000 in 2023, the US and Panama signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Monday. The MOU aims to provide financial assistance for Panama to block the Darien Gap, repatriate foreign immigrants to their home countries, and further control the number of immigrants crossing the US-Mexico border. This move is part of the Biden administration's efforts to address border control issues.
