On June 21, 2024, after Russian President Putin's visit to Vietnam, US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Candace arrived in Vietnam to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the US and Vietnam and ensure freedom and openness in the Indo-Pacific region. The visit is seen as crucial considering the recent attention on the relationships between the US, Russia, and Vietnam, with the US being Vietnam's largest export market and both countries upgrading to a comprehensive strategic partnership last year. Despite the US not favoring Putin's visit to Vietnam, it is considered important for Washington to maintain its relationship with Vietnam to counterbalance Chinese influence.
