The US and China held their first informal nuclear weapons talks in five years in March, with China promising not to resort to nuclear threats against Taiwan. Amidst the tense international situation, Japan has increased sanctions on Chinese businesses in response to the Russia-Ukraine war. This marked the first time in five years the two nations engaged in semi-official talks, with concerns raised regarding whether China would use nuclear threats against Taiwan. Despite the lack of response from Chinese officials at a routine press conference, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian expressed dissatisfaction and strong opposition to Japan's decision to follow certain countries in imposing unilateral sanctions on Chinese entities involved with Russia.
