US-China Semi-Official Nuclear Dialogue: China Affirms Won't Use Nuclear Weapons over Taiwan Issue

Yahoo News reported on June 21, 2024, stating that the US and China restarted the first semi-official nuclear talks in five years in March, with Beijing assuring the US that they would not resort to nuclear threats over the Taiwan issue. This two-day discussion held in Shanghai involved about six representatives from Washington, including former officials and scholars, and a delegation from Beijing composed of scholars and analysts, including former Chinese military officers. The US State Department spokesperson noted that such 'Track Two' talks might be beneficial and explained that while these discussions cannot replace formal negotiations, they offer insights and perspectives on issues within the Chinese government.
