US Congressional Delegation Visits Dharamsala

Reported 8 months ago

A US congressional delegation arrived in India on Tuesday to meet with the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, in Dharamsala. The delegation leader mentioned that President Biden will soon sign the 'Promoting Resolution of the Tibet-China Conflict Act,' intended to restart dialogue with exiled Tibetan leaders and address Tibetans' demands for their historical, cultural, religious, and linguistic identities. The visit may provoke Beijing, especially given the current US-China relations. The delegation, led by Republican Congressman Michael McCaul and including both Democrats and Republicans, has already reached Dharamsala where the 88-year-old Dalai Lama resides. The US lawmakers frequently visit Dharamsala to support global advocacy for Tibetan language and cultural autonomy. Beijing has expressed serious concerns about this visit and the anticipated signing of the bill by Biden, labeling the Dalai Lama as a dangerous 'separatist.' The US is urged to recognize Tibet as part of China and not support Tibetan independence.
